Just Do...Something

Do you feel like you continuously fall into a slump with your workout routine? I’ve seen it countless times as a fitness instructor. We get a new student to class who is all jazzed up about their #fitnessgoals. These girls or guys are fired up and enjoy classes, increase their strength, and appear highly motivated … for about 6-8 weeks.

So what happens?

Today I'm challenging you to lower your standards in order to raise your overall activity productivity. JUST DO SOMETHING. Because something is better than nothing, and nothing is what you end up doing when you hold yourself to standards that are higher than you can reach with that pinot in your other hand. 

I hate to break it to you, but perfection doesn't exist...so it's time to "bye Felica" those habits as they relate to fitness. I know you will find greater success for the long-haul by applying some of these practices…as unconventional as they may sound.

  1. Become routine about not having a routine. Yes, that is what I said. Don’t have a ride or die routine that you are 100% committed to and nothing else. This is why… Everyone wants that killer Insta-perfect fitness routine that produces that Insta-worthy fitness booty and beyond. Honey, leave instagram on instagram. Unless social media and your personal brand is 100% your job, life will get in the way. Most of us have jobs, kids, partners that will suddenly will request our attention at the most inopportune times. I see people constantly getting derailed when they can’t keep up with a routine that they were "100% committed" to. You miss a few days, feel like you’ve “lost everything” and fall into the ultimate trap ...the routine of doing nothing. I’m not saying avoid workouts you love, but come to terms with the fact that you might not have 30 mins a day for that beach body blast. If you can manage 15… 10 …5 mins... use it. Find multiple activities to keep in your arsenal for different allotments of your availability. Have two hours? Do a hike. One hour? Try a group class. 30 mins? Youtube a fun dance workout. 10 mins? Just get out, take a walk, do some crunches, I PROMISE it will make you feel better than doing nothing at all. 
  2. Focus on a goal area twice a week. Lets be real, we all want to SEE results. Give yourself the motivation you by devoting time twice a week to ONE area in which you want to see visible results. I really wanted to work on my obliques and see some actual definition. I dedicated several exercise sets to that area specifically twice a week. Within a month I was beginning to see visible change. Don’t know what excesses to do for a specific area? #googleit 
  3. Take a class in something different. There’s nothing that keeps a work out fun and inspiring like trying something you’ve always wanted to do. I teach circus classes for Aerial Silk. I originally started practicing silks myself just because I was fed up with being in a gym. I personally love to create, and circus was precisely that for me; creative processes with fitness as a by-product. Have you wanted to take a dance class? It doesn’t matter that you’re 30 and didn’t start in kindergarten. Studios world-wide are now offering classes for adults that are beginners. Just go…and do the thing that you’ve always said you were going to. Integrating one fun class in a week can keep your non-routine workout fresh, exciting, and creative.
  4. Fuel up…appropriately. We’ve all heard that abs are made in the kitchen and nothing is less motivating than feeling like you’re working so hard without seeing any results. It can be easy to justify binging because you “have a big workout planned tomorrow”. Girl, you’re not Michael Phelps. Your body needs fuel, but appropriate fuel. So if you’re calculating one burrito per mile, check your math. In general, working out will get you toned and define muscle but real weight loss comes from a reasonable diet for your activity level. 
  5. Remember who you’re doing it for. Fitness consistency is built on the understanding that you’re worth it. Say it to your self until you believe it, “I’m worth it, I’m worth it, I’m worth it”. We all get busy, we all miss a day ...or day’s. Getting back on the wagon requires you to know that your health and wellbeing are worth the temporary discomfort of getting back into the groove of once again…doing something.

So don’t let life derail you. It’s easy to step back on the wagon when you keep that wagon full of reasonable expectations going at a reasonable pace for you. Doing something is better than nothing, so keep up feeling fabulous by dedicating some time each day to activity. Remember, you are worthy of receiving that time.
